FAUNA With the exception of birds, there is little information on the groups of vertebrate living in the Los Glaciares National Park. Some of the typical birds are the Crown sparrow, the brown Patagonian woodpecker (Phrygilus patagonicus), the white-crested elaenia, the cachaña or small parrot, the black Patagonian woodpecker, the red-crested humminghbird, the majestic condor, the red eagle and the little red falcon. The watery environments house a great variety of birds such as the black-neck swans and the diving and torrent ducks. It is believed that Estancia Cristina is still home to huemuls. Law protects this deer, typical of the Patagonic Andean forests because it is in danger of extinction. Having been pushed away by cattle racing and neglect, it is hard to see one of them today. |
