Whoever visits this region
will undoubtedly be attracted by one of nature’s incredible
gifts: Glaciers.
Estancia Cristina stands out for being the only Estancia that provides
visitors with a natural lookout point to the Upsala Glacier, the
largest in the region. This glacier owes its name to the Swedish
City of Upsala. Back in 1908 the Upsala University sponsored the
first scientific and glaciological expeditions to this area.
The Glacier has two terminal fronts, both about 4 kilometers wide.
It’s complete surface area is 870 km2 and it is 60 km long,
making it the longest glacier in the southern Ice Cap, the largest
in South America.
One of the most outstanding spectacles the Glacier offers is that
of its icebergs. These huge blocks of ice that brake off the main
body of the Upsala literally sail, pushed along by the strong winds,
along the Northern arm of the Lake and later on the main body of
the Argeninto Lake. Many of these icebergs end up anchored along
the oriental corner of the lake where they sit until the sun, wind
and rain melt them away completely. |
